Lack of lighting knowledge ‘hinders energy savings’

Companies are missing out on big savings because of a lack of awareness of energy-efficiency measures such as lighting, according to a report published this week by the Confederation of British Industry.
In the report, the CBI points to the ‘untapped potential’ of energy-efficiency schemes for businesses, and cites a lack of knowledge as one of the biggest challenges.
The organisation is now calling on firms to invest more in energy-efficiency measures such as lighting upgrades to reduce costs and protect against long-term rises in energy prices.
Rhian Kelly, the CBI’s director for business environment policy, said: ‘Energy efficiency has sneaked under the radar in the UK’s energy debate and is making a material contribution to UK growth. But there is so much economic and environmental potential that remains unfulfilled.
‘With energy prices still on the rise, energy efficiency can help mitigate the impact on firms, particularly heavy users,’ she said.
The CBI’s report comes as businesses prepare for new legislation coming into effect on 1 October, under which they will have to report on their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Business should consider retrofitting their ceiling grids with LED Ceiling Panels, their fluorescent tubes with LED Tubes, and spots with LED GU10s. Novel Energy Lighting can provide project services for clients wishing to retrofit their buildings to LED.

Analysts Predict Strong Sales for LED GU10 Bulbs

Sales of LED bulbs are increasing this year, just as they have consistently in recent times as prices have fallen and more buyers have gained an appreciation for the benefits of this type of lighting technology.
Virtual Strategy Magazine reports that retail insiders predict that sales of LED GU10 bulbs and other competing products such as LED MR16 models will continue on an upward trajectory in terms of sales well into the future, if current trends continue.
The chief benefit of GU10 lamps and similar LED lighting solutions is that they consume much less energy than traditional bulbs and can even outdo products that are supposedly designed for efficiency.
LED lighting is increasing in importance both for commercial lighting purposes and in the domestic marketplace, with consumers becoming familiar with the options that are available to them. It has even got to the point that specialist retailers can emerge, dealing not only in LED lamps and associated solutions, but actually with specific products from within this wider marketplace.
Although LED bulbs are costlier than older lighting technologies, in the long run they can actually be a much better investment. With lower levels of energy consumption, they make less of an impact on utility bills, while the durability and longevity of the technology which they harness means that they require less maintenance. They will not need to be replaced as often as traditional bulbs.
Awareness and usage of LED lighting solutions could really explode if mainstream retailers and providers get behind the technology, enhancing its profile. They can then use the increased demand to drive down prices as adoption spreads.
GU10 LED units are already affordable and robust in their design, giving consumers plenty of reason to part with their money and experience the real benefits at first hand, which is always the best way to assess whether the claims are justified. And in 2013, it would be unwise to ignore the influence of LED lighting.
