Zumtobel will design and develop the lighting across the 61,000-seater ground in White Hart Lane, north London
Lux repots: ZUMTOBEL has won the prestigious contract to supply lighting for Tottenham Hotspur’s new £800 million stadium.
The company will supply the lighting to a design by independent consultants Buro Happold across the 61,000-seater ground including player facilities, seating bowl, circulation concourse and the extensive façade.
The multi-million pound contract is a major coup for the group and part of a wider trend of design-and-supply arrangements with single manufacturers for major infrastructural projects.
Scheduled to open in 2018, the venue will also play host to NFL American Football games, music concerts and a range of other events.
Zumtobel will also supply sister brands, including acdc, Reiss, Thorn and Tridonic.

Thorn, a brand of the Zumtobel Group, was responsible for lighting the Wembley Studium in London, the Geoffroy Guichard Stadium in Saint Étienne, the ‘Stadium of Light’ in Lyon and the Alliance Riviera Stadium in Nice for the 2016 European Football Championships in France.
The stadium has been designed by architects Populous working in conjunction with Allies & Morrison and Donald Insall Associates and is being built by main contractor Mace.

Thorn Lighting is helping to sponsor the “Sleepless Light Exercises” exhibition at The Canterbury Festival this year by supplying PopPack T26 Batten luminaires for use on a sculpture.
The annual event, which is taking place at the Chaper House in Canterbury Cathedral, is one of the most important cultural and contemporary art events to be held in the South East of England.
The exhibition by international artist Bernardi Roig, working with the University of Creative Arts (Canterbury), uses life size sculptures made from polyester resin leaning against a wall and covered in 200 of Thorn’s PopPack 58W Battens. The stark white of the sculpture, combined with the powerful illumination from the fluorescent lamps, creates a dramatic contrast within the surrounding Gothic stained glass window space. Roig’s work explores themes such as human isolation, loneliness, the limits of knowledge and the body’s deterioration. The artist has created a tense relationship between figure and background, between rational comprehension and spiritual understanding, between artificial light and divine clarity.

Thorn’s PopPack Batten incorporates a Tridonic PC T8 Pro ballast contained in a white stoved enamel outer to provide a colour rendering index of 80 and luminaire efficacy of 90 lm/w. The 1500mm luminaire is suitable for a wide range of applications, including unique exhibition displays such as the Sleepless Light Exercises.
The Time Square office building in Bracknell is home to Bracknell Forest Council. The building is typical of many UK office blocks and required a complete refurbishment, including a lighting upgrade.
The old lighting comprised 1x58W switchstart luminaires with cat 2 louvres arranged in rows within a metal plank ceiling across the office space. The luminaire design combined with old technology meant the ceiling and walls appeared very dark, creating a gloomy effect below the optimum lighting specification for offices.
Two schemes were put forward for consideration: 1x55W TC-L with high frequency dimmable
control gear and 1x42W LED with dimmable gear. The latter scheme was chosen with the contemporary recessed Quattro LED luminaire because it offered maximum energy savings. In comparison to the existing 1x58W switchstart luminaire, Quattro LED offered a 37% energy saving on connected load. Significantly, over a 12-year period, Quattro LED also offered an energy and maintenance saving of £45,543 compared to the fluorescent alternative.
Lighting controls further increase energy savings
Part of the upgrade also included the installation of daylight and presence lighting controls using Sensa Link to ensure the lighting uses the minimum amount of energy required to meet the new design specification. The new lighting levels have been designed to achieve 450 lux on the working plane with sensors programmed to dim the lights in groups according to daylight and occupancy. With the inclusion of lighting controls, lighting is only used when required, increasing the energy savings over and above the 37% achieved by upgrading to LED.

When lighting traffic routes the primary concern is safety and comfort, especially in conflict areas where traffic may be merging, becoming compressed or changing direction or in stretches of open road where traffic speeds may be high.
To ensure safety on stretches of open road involves visibility over relatively large distances, generally 30 metres or more, to account for the high traffic speeds that may be present. To achieve this at below optimal lighting levels for our eye requires a different approach to lighting which is to light the road surface, making objects appear in silhouette against the bright surface. However where speeds can be expected to be lower and objects closer, such as in conflict areas or tunnels, this no longer works as the road surface may be visually below the object outline preventing it appearing as a silhouette, and therefore the objects themselves need to be lit as opposed to the road surface. These changing requirements are reflected in the design criteria, luminance for traffic routes and illuminance for conflict areas and tunnels.
In Europe lighting requirements for roads are given in the document EN 13201 Road Lighting. This document is in multiple parts and describes how to decide the relevant road class and then the lighting requirements that this class requires. Lighting requirements for tunnel lighting are given in document CR 14380 Lighting Applications – Tunnel Lighting. However this document is a report not a standard and should be used in conjunction with local practice.
Best practice The luminaires should be appropriate for the local climactic conditions. For open areas the fitting should ideally be shaped and mounted to minimise windage, which is the effect of wind producing a stress on the luminaire and all mounting equipment. All brackets, columns, etc. should be rated to withstand the maximum windage that will be encountered. In enclosed spaces such as tunnels the luminaire should be capable of withstanding mechanical shock caused by possibly near-continuous vibration as well as the poor air-quality which may contain corrosive pollutants.
Positioning of luminaires should provide maximum guidance as to the geometry of the road, giving a coherent visual story to a road user. It should be ensured that some light spills behind the edges of the road to allow visibility of objects off the carriageway that may pose a hazard, however this should be controlled to prevent excessive obtrusive light.
For tunnels the lighting should provide a smooth transition between the entrance, tunnel interior and exit zones allow the eye to adjust to the different ambient light levels. All tunnel surfaces should be lit to ensure a comfortable and safe passage through the space.
For both roads and tunnels care should be taken to prevent distracting flicker caused by bright sources of light travelling in a periodic way through the field of view (the car windscreen). This can give a similar effect to a stationary light dimming and increasing in response to the electrical supply.
Taking control
The use of photocell switching to react to levels of daylight or timed on/off can ensure the correct light at the required time. Dimming of lighting at hours of low usage, such as the use of bi-power dimming which reduces the lighting during the early hours of the day, can significantly reduce energy usage. In addition a more advanced lighting control system can allow the lighting levels to be set to the requirements of a situation, such as raising the lighting levels at the scene of an accident or traffic congestion whilst allowing central monitoring of lighting to ensure peak light management with optimal maintenance.
High efficiency control gear that minimise electrical losses, especially for higher power lamps, help increase energy efficiency, whilst the use of a high quality optic to control the light helps reduce waste light that falls outside the target area.

Modern offices are increasingly dominated by display screen technology. Whilst appreciable quantities of paper documents are still in use they are normally in association with computers, and this balance is gradually moving toward increasing display screen use and decreasing quantities of written or printed text. A side-effect of this is the reduction in the amount of filing requirements as documents are stored on a computer disk.
This has resulted in a change in office furnishings with fewer storage cabinets and an increase in technology, and also in a fundamental shift in task position, from predominantly horizontal documents to predominantly vertical display screens.
Additionally in many offices collaborative working is encouraged where formal or informal face-to-face discussions occur to consider short-term issues or long-term plans.
Building design has also developed as energy costs and sustainability issues gain importance, resulting in a high proportion of modern office space receiving significant levels of daylight.
Best practice
These changes impact all aspects of the design of modern office building services including artificial lighting. Lighting must be designed to prevent disturbing reflections on display screens, requiring a high level of optical control and technical competence in luminaire design. Lighting must also provide adequate illuminance to occupant’s faces, modelling features sympathetically and therefore allowing good visual as well as aural communication. This interplay of display screen versus human requirements needs careful planning of a lighting installation to produce a fulfilling space suitable for the task. Recommendations for lighting for DSE and also for modelling of faces and vertical surfaces are provided in the European Standard EN 12464-1:2011 Light and lighting – Lighting of work places Part 1: Indoor work places.
EN12464-1 provides recommended illuminance levels for a variety of office tasks. These illuminance values are task related and best practice is to layer the lighting levels, balancing the level on the task, the level on the surrounding area and the level on the background. It has been shown that the perception of how light or gloomy a space appears is based upon a 40° band in front of the viewer. This is generally the room walls and a portion of the ceiling. It is therefore important that room surfaces are lit to prevent a gloomy, oppressive ambience and EN 12464-1:2011 recommends an average illuminance of 75lx on the walls and 50lx on the ceiling.
Taking control
Supplying comfortable and effective light is not the same as supplying controlled and energy-efficient light. A lighting system should interact with the space, dimming in response to increasing levels of daylight, turning on or off in response to occupancy within the space, and with increasing use of technology, especially within meetings, allow lighting scenes to be set to provide the optimal conditions for the task at hand. Lighting should be an integral part of the office ambience, giving a calm or lively atmosphere dependant upon the needs of the task and space, providing a fulfilling workplace for people to enjoy and be stimulated in, benefiting both the individual and the business.
