LUX reports: Premier League football club Hull City is planning to upgrade its pitch lighting to LED floodlights this summer. The move is aimed at meeting the needs of modern high-definition TV broadcasting as well as opening up the KC Stadium to a wider range of events.

Hull is the third Premier League club (at least it’s a Premier League club for now – relegation was on the cards at the time of publication) to adopt LED lighting for its stadium, after Southampton and Chelsea. With the technology getting cheaper and more powerful all the time, others are bound to follow.

It has opted for Philips’ ArenaVision LED floodlighting system, which has been specially developed to meet the TV broadcast requirements specified by the Premier League. It can also provide the entertaining lighting effects needed to build atmosphere and excitement before and after matches.

The lighting will be installed at the KC Stadium during this summer’s break in time for the start of the next season.

The main objective of going LED is to keep pace with the evolving needs of sports broadcasters, who require natural, flicker-free lighting to cope with high-definition super-slow motion.

LEDs are increasingly taking over from metal halide as the floodlighting source of choice. LED technology allows sports stadiums to use lighting in a more creative way, making them attractive venues for events such as concerts. Control systems allow individual floodlights to be switched on or off or dimmed. Systems such as Philips’ ArenaVision makes it possible to create pre-set light scenes for specific applications, such as dimmed energy-saving levels for cleaning and maintenance.

John North, managing director of the Stadium Management Company, said: ‘The new state-of-the-art, energy-efficient LED pitch lighting system for the KC Stadium delivers the ability to instantly change from one light setting from another. This is not just a game changer for spectators but also for the future of the modern multi-purpose stadium, a key feature of the operational strategy for our sporting venues.’

Hull will also benefit from the maintenance savings accruing from the long life of LEDs. Typically, metal halide floodlighting lamps should be replaced every three seasons to maintain the lighting levels required. The Philips LED system is expected to last more than 10 seasons.

Andy Gowen, director of public lighting at Philips Lighting UK, commented: ‘The main priority for professional sports venues has always been to ensure the correct light levels on the pitch, but with the arrival of the digital age, there is a great deal more on offer.

‘Our ArenaVision LED floodlighting bridges the worlds of entertainment lighting and static, high quality pitch lighting to deliver a memorable experience for visitors, whether they are coming to watch Hull in action or to hear their favourite bands perform.’

Wide open spaces like stadiums and school fields need a lot of lighting at night. The large size of stadiums demands extremely bright light sources. During any football match, it is important that each area of the field is illuminated and clearly visible to the players and even the crowds who are watching the game. What’s more, since matches and practice games take place regularly in these stadiums, the lights that are used are expected to last for long durations without burning out in the middle of a match.

LED Floodlights

Traditional  halogen and metal halide stadium lighting can exceed 1000W per lamp, and has a limited lifetime. Most stadiums and parks have dozens of such light fixtures for lighting up large open areas, which results in very large electric bills and ongoing maintenance costs (since floodlights tend to be in difficult to service areas). Additionally, these lamps emit an enormous amount of heat which makes them energy inefficient, and poses a fire risk.

To avoid the downsides of halogen and metal halide flood lighting, it is best to use LED Floodlights for all your outdoor lighting requirements. These lights do not contain any harmful chemicals like lead and mercury. Thus, they are environmentally safe, and because they are extremely energy efficient, they do not emit much heat even if used for a long duration. Their intelligent multi-core LED technology delivers a great deal of light from just small amounts of electricity, thereby reducing your energy bills by up to 90%. A 1000W halogen can be replaced by a 100-200W LED flood. LED floods also have long rated lifetimes of up to 50,000hours, which means that ongoing cost of ownership is low in terms of re-lamping and maintenance of difficult to reach floods.

Novel Energy Lighting supplies a wide range of high powered LED Floodlights, which are strong enough to light up Olympic-sized stadiums, outdoor municipal projects, manufacturing plants, large exhibition centers etc. What’s more, these lights require no warm up time, but emit light instantly when switched on. They even have a beam angle of 100 Deg, allowing them to disperse maximum amount of light all over a given place. And since they are eco-friendly, the do not emit harmful UV or IR light.

Additionally, all the IP65 versions of LED Floodlights available with us have an incredible lifespan of 50,000 hours and come with a warranty of 3 years. And along with these regular floodlights which deliver a cool white and warm white light with color temperatures of 6000K and 3000K respectively, we also have the Slimline range of floodlights, which are designed for commercial and showcase lighting purposes.

Security lighting: new opportunities

Andy Clements, Managing Director at ESP, explains how security and in particular EAP can provide Electricians with good business opportunities.

As the light summer evenings give way to the long dark nights of winter, security once again comes to the fore as home and business owners focus on keeping their properties protected.  This presents new opportunities for installers, as the requirement for maintaining or upgrading security systems increases.

After all, the last thing criminals want is attention being brought to their activity. Permanent lighting will illuminate and deter them. However, triggered lighting is far more likely to catch the attention of the property owner or neighbour.

The solution is the use of PIR (Passive infra-red) technology to maintain a watchful eye and provide illumination only when required. The intruder suddenly feels over exposed and risks the attention of passers-by being drawn to the scene.

The choice of PIR detectors is wide and varied. Features are relatively limited so selection should be based on build quality and performance. For external use an IP rating of 44 or above is essential.  A detection range of between 10 – 15m should be expected over an angle of detection no less than 110 degrees and up to a full 360 degrees. In addition settings are generally provided for trigger time and the ambient lux level to begin its operation. Sensitivity adjustment may be provided; however positioning of the detector is far more important than overall sensitivity.

High time

Pay attention to the manufacturer’s guidance on mounting height; it’s very important and may only relate to their product, not all PIRs are fixed at 2m. In addition don’t forget PIR detectors are far more sensitive to targets moving across their detection area rather than directly towards them. Locate the detector where this is more likely to happen.

Lastly, look out for an automatic override facility to allow permanent switching of the light source when required without the need for an additional switched live feed. This is very useful when replacing existing lighting. It’s also worth confirming that your choice of PIR is capable of switching LED floodlighting, as not all models do. If it’s not mentioned in the specification you will need to ask the manufacturer.

On camera

CCTV and PIR controlled lighting are perfect partners. The light is provided to obtain well lit images when it’s needed. Whilst many CCTV systems feature integral infra-red illumination, the clean bright output of halogen or LED will always be preferable.

Modern CCTV features motion detection within the camera and recording device creating further harmony with controlled lighting. The system can be configured to only start recording when pixel changes occur within the viewed image, thus making a huge saving on recording space required and reducing the review time needed to locate the important footage. This motion detection can also be used to remotely deliver an email or push notification to the owner of the property well before any entry attempt is made on the building.

All in one

Certain products offer PIR controlled lighting, CCTV camera and in some cases recording with time and date stamp plus a vocal alert in a single unit. All that is required is a 240VAC supply -making installations quick and simple, especially if replacing an old existing fitting. Recordings are made onto an integral SD card, which should be secured within the unit, and have the ability to overwrite when the card is full. More advanced products have the added ability to send a wire free signal to an alarm device within the property to inform occupants of activity.

Historically electronic security has very much focused on notification of an intruder entering secured buildings. EAP – external area protection – should always be integrated into security arrangements with a view to discouraging the criminal before an attempt on entry is made. External lighting falls naturally within the skill set of electricians and the step up to controlled lighting and CCTV can provide a profitable addition to their portfolio and a valuable service to clients.
